ISP: Man dies after police-involved shooting in Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WANE) – Indiana State Police have confirmed a man died after shooting at police officers at Parkview Huntington Friday night.

According to ISP Sgt. Ron Galaviz, 911 dispatchers received a call around 10 p.m. from Rual Martinez III, 38, Huntington, that he was driving an 18-year-old woman to the hospital with multiple gunshot injuries to her legs.

After additional conversation with Martinez, dispatchers sent police officers from the Huntington Police Department to the hospital.

Galaviz said when the two arrived in the hospital emergency room driveway and Martinez immediately got out of the vehicle and fired a .9mm handgun toward officers. Officers then returned fire and hit the suspect once in the hip.

Huntington County Coroner Phil Zahm ruled Saturday that Martinez died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

18-year-old Destiny Shanks of Fort Wayne was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown and her relationship with the suspect has not yet been determined by investigators.

Police have not said where Shanks was shot.

Prior to the suspect and victim arriving at the hospital, Parkview officials placed the hospital in lockdown. Nothing happened inside the hospital and no one else was hurt. After a few hours, Parkview was back open and operating under mostly normal procedures.

Galaviz said the Parkview Police Department was one scene, but were not actively engaged with the shooting.

The incident is under investigation.
