HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — There’s an early Christmas present for drivers traveling through Hamilton County.
Major construction on US 31 is over. The highway opened in both directions on Friday.
Six-hundred-million dollars was spent to convert the road to federal highway standards. INDOT says this was the largest and most aggressive road project ever in the county. The project involved removing 13 traffic lights just in Hamilton County alone.
After four years of delays, drivers say they are happy to have this over with.
“I’m very happy about it,” one driver said. “It’s great that it’s open and I think it’s beautiful thing. I really do.”
You will see additional construction on the roadway for about another year. The project is expected to be completed sometime next year.
On Monday, Gov. Mike Pence helped cut the ribbon to officially open the freeway.
