INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – New York Street on IUPUI’s campus will open for the first time as a two-way street on Tuesday afternoon. The opening was originally set for Monday, but it was postponed due to weather. This affects New York Street between West Street and White River Parkway.
It’s a $2.6 million project: A part of the city’s Rebuild Indy initiative.
Officials say it’s designed to help make campus and the area hospitals safer for pedestrians by slowing traffic, and also to help “increase traffic circulation.”
The project includes two lanes heading either way, turn lanes, sidewalk and a bike path.
This is similar to the upcoming project on Michigan Street, that will convert Michigan to a two-way street beginning in 2016. That project is set to be completed in 2017.
New York Street’s two-way lanes will open Tuesday between 3:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.
