Ex-Monroe County official chosen to fill SW Indiana seat

BLOOMFIELD, Ind. (AP) – A former Monroe County councilman outlasted five other candidates to win selection to an open southwestern Indiana legislative seat by Republican precinct committee members.

Jeff Ellington of Bloomington was chosen Monday night after five rounds of voting for the House District 62 seat vacated by Rep. Matt Ubelhor of Bloomfield.

Ellington, a firefighter and owner of a tree-cutting business owner, said two of his priorities will be jobs and education. He also spoke during the caucus about opportunities surrounding the Interstate 69 extension now stretching from Evansville to Bloomington.

He also says he believes in limited government and “wants to let taxpayers keep more of their paychecks and wants businesses to be unleashed to their full potential.”

District 62 covers parts of Greene, Monroe, Martin and Daviess counties.
