LE CLAIRE, Iowa (KWQC) – A Iowa police officer went above the call of duty to help someone in need.

A man was spotted sleeping in a ditch along Interstate 80 near Le Claire, Iowa over the weekend. He told Le Claire Officer Adam Thomas he was resting while walking from Des Moines all the way to Peoria. He told the officer he was trying to get home for the holiday and couldn’t find a ride.

Officer Thomas decided to buy him a meal and took him as far as his jurisdiction would allow which was across the river to the Illinois welcome center. He snapped a picture with the man and says he learned a lot during their brief encounter.

“When he said he wanted to get home for the holidays, it kind of hit home for me. He’s an adult and everybody has tough times in their life. It wasn’t necessarily being a police officer. I think anyone would have helped. Someone even wanted to stop and check on him so other people cared,” said Officer Thomas.

KWQC tried to track the man down, but attempts to contact him were unsuccessful. Officer Thomas says many people have reached out with hopes of helping the man get to his destination, but he’s not sure if he made it to Peoria or not.
