INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Police are searching for two men who fled after reportedly firing shots at officers on the southeast side of Indianapolis Tuesday evening.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Rural Street and East Minnesota Street.

IMPD says someone called police to report a person with a gun at Berkley Commons Apartments near Madison Avenue and East Stop 11. Police arrived and a short chase ensued.

Near the intersection of Rural Street and East Minnesota Street, police say one of the suspects fired at officers through the back windshield of their vehicle. According to IMPD, the suspects’ vehicle crashed into an apartment building where small children were present.

Police say the suspects exited their vehicle and continued firing as they fled on foot. Officials said Tuesday night that nine shots had been fired at police. No officers returned fire.

A police vehicle was hit by gunfire on the passenger side, but no officers were injured. Homes in the area were also struck by gunfire, but no civilians were hurt. Police say the bullets narrowly missed a young child as they slept.

Police used a helicopter, K-9s and a SWAT team to search for the men but were unable to find them. They’re hoping the car they were in will provide evidence.

If you have any information that could assist police in their investigation, call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
