Albuquerque man tricks thief into stealing box of dog poop

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Tis the season for thieves. It’s a common sight around the holidays to see a postal worker deliver a package to someone’s doorstep, only for a crook to come in and swipe it. But an Albuquerque man has tricked a holiday package thief into stealing a box filled with dog poop.

“They are like the Grinch who stole Christmas,” said Tim Ragsdale.

However, Ragsdale, who lives in the Heights, won’t let any of those naughty listers steal his Christmas.

He’s come up with a plan to catch the crooks in the act.

“I thought instead of just giving them a box full of, umm I cleaned up after the dogs. Let’s just leave it there,” he said.

Once Ragsdale tapes up a box with a stinky surprise, he puts it on his front porch and waits.

If a thief walks toward Ragsdale’s home, surveillance cameras will start to record a video.

The video is then sent directly to Ragsdale’s cell phone.

On Wednesday afternoon, his high-tech system caught a guy messing with his decoy package.

“I can post them (the videos) to YouTube to hopefully shame the people who would do these things,” said Ragsdale.

He also has the option to send the videos to local law enforcement.

“Perhaps they will reconsider trying to steal someone’s Christmas,” he said.

Ragsdale’s neighbors like the idea.

“I think it’s a great idea and I know my husband would absolutely love it,” said Lisa Sears.

“I have had a lot of people thanking me for the idea,” said Ragsdale.

Ragsdale said a thief stole his first fake package in less than an hour. That’s when he decided to set up security cameras.
