Salvation Army comes to the rescue for local family

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A local family is counting its blessings following a fire earlier this week.

“The damage that was done is materialistic but through the grace of God everybody made it out so that’s all that we were concerned about,” said Cherrika Duncan, who’s grandmother’s Stuart Street home burned down earlier this week.

The family lost nearly everything in that fire, but that Hoosier Hospitality was on display on Christmas Eve to help make this Christmas a little brighter.

“As long as we keep the support going and the love I believe everything will be alright,” said Duncan.

The fire destroyed everything in its path, including Christmas presents.

“Everybody’s just trying to stick together and keep their heads up,” said Duncan.

Duncan’s grandmother owned the home. In the basement were Christmas presents for her five grandchildren.

“It was just horrific to just see how things went down but everybody is holding on,” said Duncan.

But Christmas was saved. On Thursday Cherrika went to the Salvation Army to pick up not only Christmas gifts, but also other items that were damaged.

“There’s a reason we’re doing this and its to serve those in need here in this community and it gives us that energy that we need to make sure that we can still help those in need,” said Mike Rowland with the Salvation Army.

One person who was in the house is still in the hospital, but is expected to survive. Duncan said they’re now trying to find a place to get everyone together so they can have a proper Christmas dinner.
