INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three people, including a child, have died and several others were hurt in a crash at East Street near Interstate 465 late Wednesday night.
The Indianapolis Fire Department said it happened around 11:45 p.m. According to IFD, a black Mustang traveling southbound on East Street lost control, jumped the median and collided head-on with a Chevy Trailblazer that was headed northbound.
According to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report, the Mustang and a Corvette were racing before the crash. Witnesses told police that the Mustang and Corvette were stopped at a red light and were revving their engines. They said when the light turned green, both vehicles took off at a high rate of speed like they were racing.
Witnesses described the driver of the Mustang “flooring it,” causing the vehicle to fishtail and cross in front of the Corvette. The Mustang then hit the median and collided with the Chevy Trailblazer.
The police report says the driver of the Corvette initially left the scene but was brought back by a family member.
An adult man and an adult woman who were in the Chevy Trailblazer died at the scene. Crews took a 12-year-old girl, who was also in the Trailblazer, to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in critical condition. She died at the hospital.
Four people were in the Mustang at the time of the crash. Crews took the driver and a passenger, both 20-year-old men, to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in good condition. A 20-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in good condition. The IMPD police report states that no one in the Mustang could remember what happened.
The area was shut down for several hours while authorities investigated.
