GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — A volunteer organization has donated several thousand dollars to help a recovering Indiana K-9 officer.

AT&T Pioneers, which is made up of AT&T employees and retirees, recently donated $4,000 to the Shirley Police Department, 24-Hour News 8’s partners at The Greenfield Reporter report.

The donation was made to cover the remaining medical costs of the department’s only K9 officer, Charon.

Charon had emergency surgery in November to correct a life-threatening case of a flipped stomach.

The Greenfield Reporter reports Shirley’s officers usually rely on the community to cover Charon’s expenses, including food and vet bills. The department needed $5,000 to pay for the surgery.
