INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It was a sad start to the new year for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

IMPD announced Friday one of its police K-9s had died.

Rocky, an 11-year-old Belgian Malinois, died while off duty Friday.

He served his final shift with his handler Stephanie Humerickhouse on New Year’s Eve.

The department says Rocky loved his work, enjoyed socializing with the officers and also liked school trips and seeing children during his K-9 demos.

“Although Rocky’s End of Watch has arrived, he is now an Angel in Blue who wore his badge with honor every day and will be remembered by his comrades and friends now that he is no longer with us,” IMPD wrote on its Facebook page.

Before coming to work with IMPD in Sept. 2011, Rocky was a service K-9 with border patrol units in El Paso, Texas.
