FEMA denies aid to northern Indiana lake after summer floods

PERU, Ind. (AP) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has again denied funding for a northern Indiana lake to repair damage caused by record flooding in July.

The Kokomo Tribune reports that Mississinewa Lake’s request was part of a statewide filing for FEMA aid in which 19 counties reported $11 million in damage from the summer floods.

FEMA also denied a request in October, saying that the state experienced two distinct weather systems, causing two separate disasters. FEMA said each disaster would need to have caused at least $9.1 million in damages to qualify for assistance.

Assistant property manager Alec Snelson says lake officials are now working with federal and state administrators to secure funding.

Property Manager Larry Brown has said that the lake needs around $900,000 in repairs.
