Guns, cars see record-setting sales in 2015

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Gun and car sales are reporting record years.

Jane King was live on Daybreak Wednesday morning with the latest local and national business headlines.

The U.S. Automakers posted a 9-percent sales gain in December, an exclamation point that sealed 2015 as the biggest sales year ever for the industry.

All told, automakers sold 17.5 million new vehicles for the year, Autodata reported, besting the previous record set in 2000.

Also seeing record sales last year – guns. New federal data shows 2015 was a record-smashing year for the American Firearms Industry, with gun sales appearing to hit the highest level on record.

Background checks for gun purchases and permits jumped 10-percent last year to 23.1 million, the largest number since the federal background check system began operating in 1998.

The year-end surge happened partly in response to the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, followed by President Obama’s calls for more restrictions on gun sales.
