More reports of cars being stolen while warming up

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – It was a wild Thursday morning on the city’s southwest side, as a car was stolen, crashed and burst into flames.

This all started with someone warming up their car

It happened on the 6500 block of Yellowstone Parkway, near Bluff Road and Banta Road at about 6:30 a.m.

“I was asleep, heard a huge crash, didn’t really know what was happening,” said Julia Carnes, who witnessed the fire. “We were dead asleep it was around 6:30 a.m. so looked out the blinds and like I thought the mailbox was on fire it was really unclear.”

A 14-year-old was arrested an hour later in a nearby Kroger. Police said he stole the car while it was warming up.

The damage was more apparent come daylight. There was bark stripped from the tree, a muddy mess in the front lawn and a street sign ripped from its post and flung nearly 20 feet.

“I heard the sirens, and heard a helicopter,” said Cynthia Miller, who lives on the same street. “So I knew something was going on, saw the lights flashing and people couldn’t get through the streets.

According to IMPD, it’s at least the fifth report this week of this sort of crime happening, including to a west side woman who didn’t want to be identified.

“My truck was stolen Monday morning. Left the keys in it running and husband came out to go to work and it was gone,” she said

It was parked on the street in front of her home.

“I will never leave my truck running with my keys in it again,” she said.

Her truck was found just a few blocks away.

As for Thursday morning’s crash, it’s unclear what charges the teenager could face.
