Not so fast: Indiana college campuses stop hoverboards in their tracks

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)- Some local college students might be returning some Christmas presents once they get back to campus.

Hoverboards are now banned in some capacity on many college campuses in Indiana.

Indiana University and Purdue University stated that hoverboards are banned from campus residence halls. Associate Vice President of Public Affairs at IU, Mark Land, said they pose a fire hazard as a reason for their decision. Students can continue to use the boards on campus to get from place to place, but they can’t be stored in the the residence halls.

Butler University has banned all use of hoverboards. Marc Allan, the news manager at Butler, said they pose a safety issue for all students and will not be allowed on campus.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is reviewing the safety of the hoverboard and hopes to publish findings soon. According to the commission, injuries have been reported all over the United States. Some have been serious including concussions, fractures, abrasions and internal organ injuries.
