Car flips into pond, rescuers pull driver to safety

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A sheriff’s deputy and Good Samaritans rescued the driver of a car that went off a northeast-side roadway and flipped into a pond Thursday afternoon.

Fire rescuers and Allen County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 4:30 p.m. to a pond just off the intersection of Popp and Leo roads on a report a car had veered into its waters. The pond sits on the northwest side of the intersection.

Dispatchers told WANE-TV the occupant of the car was able to escape safely. Police at the scene said that a sheriff’s deputy, an Amish construction crew and a passing driver broke the window of the vehicle to pull the driver out. A condition of the driver was not immediately available.

Investigators believe the driver suffered a medical condition that led to the crash into the pond.

The car was pulled out of the pond a little after 5 p.m.

While responders investigated Leo Road (State Road 1) down to one lane. The road was back opened by 5:15 p.m.
