Indiana man fleeing arrest dies after plunging into river

WAWAKA, Ind. (AP) – Authorities in northeastern Indiana say a 35-year-old man fleeing sheriff’s deputies trying to arrest him died after he ran into an icy river.

The Noble County Sheriff’s Office says the man plunged into the Little Elkhart River near his home in Wawaka around 7:20 p.m. on Thursday and didn’t surface.

Police identified the man as 35-year-old Raymond Lee Cassidy. Authorities said after officers knocked on his door, Cassidy exited his home and ran past officers and toward the river. Officers broke through the ice, but lost contact and stopped pursuing him.

Officers say emergency officials were called. Cassidy’s body was found two hours later in the river.

Authorities said Cassidy had outstanding felony warrants alleging dealing in methamphetamine and neglect of a dependent and an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.
