New INDOT snow plows can clear 2 lanes at once

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — New snow plows will be clearing Indiana’s multi-lane roads a bit quicker this winter.

INDOT says new plows, called tow plows, allow one truck to clear two lanes of an interstate at the same time.

The tow plow and salt spreader are pulled behind and to the side of a standard yellow INDOT truck.

The apparatus can be deployed or retracted with in-cab controls.

Indiana State Police say not to try to pass an INDOT truck when the tow plow is extended.

While the new trucks could be deployed around the state, INDOT says plow drivers will primarily focus on these areas:

  • Interstate 74 between I-465 and Greensburg
  • Interstate 69 between State Road 32 and State Road 26
  • U.S. 40 West from Cambridge City to SR 3 in Henry County, then North on SR3 to I-70
  • U.S. 31 Kokomo freeway

ISP also wants to remind drivers to be extra careful when traveling around snow plows.

  • Stay back: Give snow plows room to work. The plows are wide and can cross lane markings, including the centerline and shoulder. Don’t tailgate and try not to pass. If you must pass, take extreme caution and beware of snow coming off the plow.
  • Slow down: Snow plows travel below the speed limit. Be patient. They clearing roads of snow and ice and helping to keep you safe. Allow plenty of time. Remember, “Ice and snow, take it slow.”
  • Make room: A snow plow operator’s field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they don’t always see you. Keep your distance and watch for sudden stops or turns.
