Rain changing to snow this weekend

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A potent system will take aim on central Indiana this weekend, bringing rain, snow, and eventually bitter cold temperatures.

The system will arrive Saturday afternoon, bringing widespread rain showers to central Indiana.

Colder air will meet up with the precipitation, and allow for a changeover from rain to snow late Saturday night into Sunday morning from west to east.

A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect Saturday night through Sunday for the northern third of Indiana, where snow totals will be heaviest.

For most of central Indiana, we could see anywhere between less than an inch well southeast of Indianapolis, to as high as 3″-4″ in northern and northwestern parts of central Indiana. Snowfall will be scattered, so a widespread blanket of snow across the state is not expected.

Winds will pick up out of the northwest by early morning Sunday, gusting at times up to 35 mph, causing for low visibility at times as the snow falls.

Snow should start to wind down by the mid to late morning, Sunday. Temperatures will continue to fall to the teens by Sunday afternoon.

Winds will remain strong, allowing for wind chill values to fall to as low as the single digits for much of the second half of the day, Sunday, and could fall to near 0° for the morning commute, Monday.
