INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The wife of former Butler University basketball star Andrew Smith provided a heartbreaking update about her husband’s illness on Sunday.
Andrew has been battling cancer since 2014. In a new blog post Sunday, his wife Samantha wrote, “The doctors tell me death is imminent and that Andrew is going to die from this disease. There are no treatments, no clinical trials…there is nothing left to do.”
Last month, Samantha wrote that Andrew’s Lymphoma had turned into Leukemia and that a bone marrow transplant failed. She said that his cancer had become extremely aggressive.
“My heart breaks into a million pieces thinking of all who would lose so much if he goes – a friend, a son, a brother, a teammate, and an inspiration to us all,” Samantha wrote Sunday. “We would all lose so much because he has impacted every single person that he has ever come into contact with. His kindness is instantaneous to strangers and his caring nature and ever-gentle heart is felt by every person lucky enough to have any sort of relationship with him.”
Andrew was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2014. The Zionsville native played in the national title games with the Bulldogs in 2010 and 2011.
