Avon police to the public: don’t repost threats

AVON, Ind. (WISH) — Police are urging the public to avoid sharing or retweeting any online threats after a string of social media posts prompted heightened security at local schools.

Officials said Avon schools have not been named in any of the recent online threats, but someone did mention the Avon police in one of the posts.

Over the weekend, Avon Police took to Facebook to ask people to let the police know if they see an online threat but to avoid sharing or re-posting the message. A department spokesman said one reason for the Avon Police Department (APD) post is that police are getting flooded with tips they already know about.

Joan Scherre, who has two grandkids who go to school in Avon, said she agrees that people shouldn’t share the threats.

“You’re just perpetuating what they want: the attention,” Scherre said.

Although no Avon schools have been mentioned in recent threats, a school in neighboring Plainfield was named.

Avon Police said they will double their presence this week within the Avon Community School corporation.

That’s good news for Scherre.

“You have to take them serious but you also have people who just want to do that to just get the attention,” she said. “It needs to be investigated but you can’t just not go to school for a month.”

The APD Facebook post went on to say, “Our agency continues to monitor the situation to make sure we are responding appropriately and in the best interest of the community.”
