Crews work to restore power in bitter cold

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Crews have been working overnight to get power back on to thousands of people.

Outages spiked since the cold weather set in on Sunday. Monday morning, most everyone in central Indiana had their power back on.

As of 3 a.m., Duke still had about 600 customers without power in Delphi. The Duke outages spiked around noon Sunday. There were about 7,000 customers without power at one point Sunday, most of those customers were in Shelby County. Duke was able to fix the problems Sunday night and Monday morning. Dispatchers say a power line was broken.

There are are several reasons that the power may go out when it’s this cold outside. Snow could weigh on the power lines, or wind and snow could knock down tree branches into power lines. When it’s this cold outside, people are also using more power to stay warm. That can sometimes overwhelm the system.
