New IMPD chief recruits civilians to help hire staff

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – On Monday, IMPD Chief Troy Riggs began the process of selecting his command staff, and local residents lent a hand in the selection process.

On Tuesday, IMPD Chief Riggs will conduct interviews for the assistant chief positions that the city has open, but residents in Indianapolis will help him select those candidates.

The committee consists of 11 people who will review resumes, conduct interviews and then make recommendations to Riggs.

“It will be important for us that the group looks like our community,” said Riggs.

This style of policing is what Riggs calls community engagement.

“We are going to have people from the community that know the city and know what they want from the police department,” Riggs.

IMPD commanders are expected to go through this same process.

In addition to taking the recommendations Riggs will look into each candidates background, and also work history when making a selection.

“If we are going to be a community minded police department, we have to have an executive staff that believes in that,” said Riggs. “I want to be serious about that, I need the community to help me chose the next leaders.”

The 11 committee members have been selected; however, you can make a suggestion to Riggs on possible leaders through his email at IMPD_Chief@indy.gov
