LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — One man has been arrested after a pedestrian was struck and killed on Monday evening.
Police say the driver involved, 23-year-old Christopher Spells, was actually in two crashes. The first was in the 8600 block of Pendleton Pike, the second near 46th Street and Franklin Road.
Police said that they driver committed battery in the parking lot of a nearby Kroger grocery store, and then climbed into a vehicle that was reported stolen on New Year’s Eve.
Police said the driver hit a man on a bicycle, killing him before driving away and hitting another car that had two people inside.
The bicyclist has been identified as 54-year-old Mervin Smith of Indianapolis.
The two people inside the vehicle that was hit were transported to Community North Hospital in stable condition to be treated for minor injuries.
Spells faces preliminary charges of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, a level three felony.
