Caught on camera: Mass. robbery leads to violent knife fight

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – The robbery at Jarek’s Market in Fall River on Sunday only took one minute, but the owner of the convenience store said it felt like it lasted a lifetime.

The heart-pounding knife fight and robbery that followed were caught on the store’s surveillance cameras, and Monday, WPRI spoke with the man involved in that fight.

He said it was 9:30 a.m. Sunday with the suspected robber pulled up on his bike outside the store on Fifth Steet. Video from outside the store shows the suspect hopping off of his bike and quickly making his way inside.

The store owner, who did not want to be identified, said the suspect pulled out a knife and demanded money. He said he shouted, “give me money!” while wielding the weapon.

Fearing for his life, the owner said he also pulled out a knife, swinging at the thief until he dropped the knife in the struggle.

After just a minute-long scuffle, the owner said the thief made off with $200 in cash. He also took the owner’s large knife.

The store owner said he wasn’t seriously hurt in the altercation and only suffered minor scratches to his face and hand.

He also said this wasn’t the first time he had to defend himself with a knife inside his store. Back in 2014, the owner scared off a would-be robber with the same knife he used this weekend.

The owner admitted Sunday’s altercation was scarier for him because it occurred in broad daylight – a crime he called “unacceptable.”

Police said the investigation is active and they plan to release more information on Tuesday.
