Firefighter headed to fire scene seriously hurt in crash

CONNERSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – A man was seriously injured Wednesday morning after a crash involving a semi in Fayette County.

It happened on State Road 44, west of Connersville, around 7:15 a.m. Police arrived and found a black 2002 Chevrolet pickup in a ditch and a 2012 International tractor-trailer across both lanes of SR 44.

Preliminarily, police say the pickup was westbound on SR 44 when the driver lost control on an icy section of the road. The truck spun around into the eastbound lane where it collided with the semi.

The driver of the semi was not hurt. The driver of the pickup had to be extricated from his vehicle and was taken by medical helicopter to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis with internal injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck is a volunteer firefighter with the Bentonville Fire Department. Police believe he was heading to the Glenwood Fire Department to help with a fire at the time of the crash.
