The tables have turned: Robbery suspect detained by clerk

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — On Wednesday morning, a man walked into a Marathon gas station on the corner of 38th Street and North Mitthoefer Road.

He handed the clerk behind the counter a note and demanded he read it.

According to police, on the tattered piece of paper were demands for cash from the clerk. After reading the demands, the clerk pulled out a gun and pointed it at the suspect.

“He didn’t have a weapon or nothing, he just gave up,” said the clerk who didn’t wish to be named.

The clerk held the gun on the suspect until police arrived.

“People think it’s easy you can go in and rob a store and get away with it,” said the manger.

Once on the scene officers detained the man and his mother. Investigators believe the two were trying to use a taxi as a getaway vehicle.

Detectives released the mother and son, after the clerk decided not to press charges against the mother and son.

It’s unclear if the suspects are tied to any other crimes in the city.

According to gas station ownership, the station has not been robbed in years. Currently most of the clerks at the east side gas station carry a gun for added protection.

“I was surprised. It was very brazen, I don’t know how stupid you can get,” said the manager of the station.

This case happened less than a week after a masked man fired shots at a clerk during a robber. A bullet proof glass blocked the bullets from striking the victim.

IMPD has not found a suspect in that case.

In the past, a group pushed for Indiana State Legislature  to adopt a proposal that would ensure protections for clerks at gas stations in the state.
