Driver charged in fatal bus crash may represent himself

HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — A man accused of being behind the wheel with cocaine in his system during a fatal bus crash may represent himself in his upcoming trial.

Charles Goodman is accused of driving with drugs in his system when a church bus crashed last July.

According to online court records, Goodman appeared in court Wednesday without counsel and stated that he may want to represent himself. The court appointed a pauper attorney and advised Goodman talk to the appointed counsel before making a decision.

Goodman is to go to trial on March 14.

Goodman faces a pair of felonies and a misdemeanor in the crash for reckless homicide, driving while suspended and causing death while operating intoxicated.

6-year-old Jacob Williams died in the crash as his family traveled with him from a Gary, Indiana church. Ten other people, including Goodman, were injured in the crash.

Goodman had claimed the bus had technical issues but court records indicate he told police that he had fallen asleep.
