Governor Pence celebrates MLK Day through annual day of service

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Governor Mike Pence joined many Hoosiers in service for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

In the 5th annual Governor’s MLK Day of Service, the governor and other volunteers from his cabinet and their staff went to Shepherd Community Center.

Governor Pence read to children and talked to many of them.

According to the release, it got the holiday weekend off to a great start.

“We’re excited about this opportunity to have Governor Pence and his many staff members here serving alongside us to break the cycle of poverty for our neighbors,” says Shepherd Community Center’s Executive Director Jay Height. “It takes eight significant positive relationships for a child to break the cycle of poverty and these volunteers are part of that powerful process. For over 30 years, we’ve seen lives being transformed here on the near Eastside of Indy. Collaborating with the Governor and his team are a critical part in helping us dive deeper into our communities to help even more families in need.”

More than 140 children were in attendance, ages preschool to fifth grade.
