MERCER COUNTY, Ohio (WANE) The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department will hold a press conference Friday afternoon to announce its preliminary findings on possible human bones discovered Jan. 3.

In the last update, Sheriff Jeff Grey said one of the bones – found by someone walking in a state park off U.S. 127 near Coldwater Creek – was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s forensic lab. There, experts determined the bone had a high probability of being human.

The sheriff’s department also contacted an expert at a university who concluded based on photos that there is a high probability the bones are human.

After officers finished collecting evidence, the bones were transported to the university expert for evaluation. That was supposed to happen this past Tuesday. Sheriff Grey didn’t know how long it would take for the expert to reach a conclusion on whether the bones are human.

The sheriff’s department hasn’t indicated if Friday afternoon’s press conference will include the findings from the expert.
