Smith to be remembered at Butler basketball game

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Former Butler basketball player Andrew Smith will be remembered at the university’s basketball game Saturday against St. John’s University. The game starts at noon inside Butler University’s Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Smith died on Tuesday, January 12 after a two-year battle with cancer. He’s described as a Butler basketball standout who was a member of school’s two teams that made a run for the national championship title. Smith was also an Academic All-American.

Saturday’s game is part of the “Stay Positive Day”, an organization run by two-time cancer survivor Eric Day. Stay Positive’s goal is to raise $25,000 for Smith’s family.

Butler students will sell wristbands at today’s Butler basketball game. The cost is $1 each.

The wristband has “Stay Positive” on it and has the inscription “G3”, which stands for Give God Glory.

Posters and bookmarks with Smith’s favorite Bible verses on them will also be sold at the basketball game. They will cost $5 each.

One thousand T-shirts will be on sale for $10 each, featuring an image of mascot Butler Blue III with antlers to symbolize Smith’s “Moose” nickname. Students in the Dawg Pound section of Hinkle Fieldhouse will wear the shirts.

The Andrew Smith Scholarship Fund has also been created. It will provide scholarship support for future Butler Bulldogs on the men’s basketball team. Contributions in Andrew’s honor may be made online at Bulldognation.butler.edu/andrewsmith or by check to Butler University Advancement, 4600 Sunset Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46208. Please reference “Andrew Smith Scholarship Fund” in the check memo or online designation field.

A Celebration of Life Service for Andrew Smith will be held on Sunday, January 17 at Traders Point Christian Church (6590 S. Indianapolis Road, Whitestown, IN 46075). The service will begin at 5:00 p.m., with doors opening at 4:00 p.m.
