33-year-old dolphin dies at SeaWorld Orlando

ORLANDO, FL (WFLA) – A 33-year-old Commerson’s dolphin named Betsy has passed away at SeaWorld Orlando.

SeaWorld shared the news on their Facebook page on Sunday.

Betsy was recently relocated to Orlando from SeaWorld San Diego along with two other long-term companion dolphins.

She had been receiving 24-hour veterinary care in an off-exhibit medical pool at SeaWorld’s Aquatica with her caretakers and companions when she died. Betsy reportedly had been suffering from gastrointestinal problems and irregular eating habits in the days leading up to her death.

Commerson’s dolphins have an average lifespan of 15-18 years, according to SeaWorld’s website.

The exact cause of death is currently unknown pending a necroscopy.
