Vital heart scans offered to IMPD officers

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers are getting vital heart scans, for free.

Methodist Health Foundation and Indy Public Safety Foundation partnered to provide heart scans to IMPD officers.

Through fundraising started by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, more than $23,000 was raised. That will allow around 500 officers to receive the scan at no cost.

“We believe that lives will be saved as a result. We’re very grateful that they’re doing this. We certainly think that this shows compassion towards our first responders. They are protecting those who protect us each and every day and we’re very grateful for that.”

According to the release, around 14 percent of police officer deaths in the U.S. were due to heart attacks.

“This is a great example of what happens when partners and the community come together to protect the health of those who protect us,” said Sally McGuffey, Methodist Health Foundation Chief Development Officer.
