Indy zoo ready to welcome newest addition
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Excitement is building for the Indianapolis Zoo’s newest arrival this spring.
In November, the zoo announced that one of their orangutans is pregnant. Now, Sirih, a 23-year-old Sumatran Orangutan is in her third trimester and should give birth this spring.
Zoo keepers are taking great care of Sirih with a variety of fruit smoothies and other fresh produce. They also say that Sirih has formed a special bond with another orangutan named Nicky.
Sumatran Orangutans are currently listed as critically endangered, with only 65,000 in the wild.
This is the latest addition in what has been a baby boom at the zoo.
This year the zoo has announced the additions of meerkat pups, lion cubs and a baby gibbon.
