ISP: Man runs out of gas, killed on I-65

JASPER COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – An early morning hit-and-run crash has resulted in the death of a Missouri man, according to Indiana State Police.

The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday on Interstate 65 at mile-marker 208. That’s about seven miles south of the State Road 114/Rensselear Exit in Jasper County. State police said they received a call of someone walking along I-65. But before troopers could arrive, they received two more calls of someone on the ground beside the interstate.

Fifty-eight-year-old Mark Tobiasz of Saint Charles, Missouri, was found on the shoulder at mile-marker 208 and had appeared to be hit. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County Coroner’s Office of massive blunt force trauma.

Troopers also found an abandoned vehicle nearby that belonged to the deceased. ISP said it appears Tobiasz ran out of gas.

State police believe, based off parts recovered at the scene, that a Kenworth or Freightliner semi hit Tobiasz.

News 18 spoke with Jasper County Coroner Andrew Boersma Friday morning who said ISP is now working with Missouri State Police on the case.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Indiana State Police Det. Sgt. Rick Strong at 219-696-6242.
