Northern Indiana woman dies after struck by squad car

WARSAW, Ind. (AP) – A northern Indiana woman has died after being struck by a police squad car while crossing a road to get her mail.

Warsaw police say 67-year-old Sharon Mitterling died Friday night while being transported to a Fort Wayne hospital.

Police say 30-year-old Winona Lake Officer John Leeper of Warsaw struck the woman about 6 p.m. He told investigators that he spotted Mitterling walking down her driveway and then briskly into the road, without looking, wearing a winter jacket with a hood pulled up over her head.

Leeper said he swerved to avoid the collision, but was unable to.

Leeper was driving to work to start his shift, and was not responding to a call for service.
