State lawmakers recognized for being civil

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Here’s a man-bites-dog story. A handful of state lawmakers were recognized Monday for being civil.

It’s part of an effort to elevate the debate at the Statehouse.

A newly-formed group of retired lawmakers is trying to encourage more civility. It created an award that is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

It was given to three senators, Luke Kenley of Noblesville, Vaneta Becker of Evansville and Earline Rogers of Gary.

State Representatives Tim Brown of Crawfordsville and Charlie Brown of Gary were also recognized for, among other things, setting good examples.

“So as to reflect positively on and to generate respect for the General Assembly,” said retired legislator Ralph Foley.

“With the acrimony and the fighting and the circular firing squads we see taking place in politics,” said former legislator Dale Grubb. “Young kids who have a desire to figure out where they’re going in life have discounted government service, and I think that would be a travesty.”

The names of the winners will be displayed on plaques that will hang in the House and Senate chambers.

A committee made up of former lawmakers, lobbyists and the media chose the winners of the civility award.
