Teen charged in shooting outside of Lawrence Central High School
LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) — A 17-year-old has been charged after a shooting outside of a Lawrence high school.
Paul Rayner faces three charges in the case: criminal recklessness, carrying a handgun without a license and dangerous possession of a firearm.
According to investigators, a 15-year-old was shot in the leg outside of Lawrence Central High School around 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. He was sent to Riley Hospital for Children with non-life threatening injuries.
A witness said several shots were fired in the direction of the school.
Police say surveillance video from the school shows the shooting happen.
In an interview with police, the victim stated that he and his friends had an altercation with Rayner and identified Rayner as the shooter.
Police said that ammunition were found in Rayner’s dresser at his parent’s house.
Court documents state that Rayner admitted to firing the gun to frighten a group that had been following him.
Rayner said he had the gun for protection and that he got it in Gary, Indiana. He said it didn’t have a serial number and that he believes his friends threw it in a lake.
He was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention center.
Rayner had a previous conviction of dangerous possession of a firearm.
Rayner is due in court Tuesday morning for an initial hearing.
