Judge sentences man for baby’s death

FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) – A man will spend about 25 years in prison for killing his 2-month-old child.

Ian Defenderfer pleaded guilty but mentally ill to felony battery causing the death of a person less than 14 years old.

A judge sentenced Defenderfer to a 30-year term with the Indiana Department of Correction. Of that, he received credit for a little more than a year served in jail. Four years of his sentence were suspended.

Defenderfer was also recommended for mental health treatment while in prison.

The 2-month-old boy died Oct. 5, 2014 after hospitalization. Two days later, the Marion County Coroner determined the baby died from blunt force trauma to the head. The coroner said the baby also had signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome.
