Human remains being excavated in southern Harrison County

MAUCKPORT, Ind. (AP) – Forensic anthropologists are working with a southern Indiana sheriff’s department in excavating human remains.

Harrison County Sheriff Rod Seelye says the remains are “relatively recent … skeletal remains.” He said Friday that shoes were found with them, so investigators don’t believe they’re part of an ancient burial ground.

The remains were found Thursday by a highway construction worker in a wooded, remote area near State Route 135 and the Ohio River outside the town of Mauckport, about 30 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky.

A team of forensic anthropologists from the University of Indianapolis began work at the site Thursday afternoon.

It’s not clear yet whether the remains are those of a man or a woman.
