Classes resume at Amy Beverland after principal’s death

LAWRENCE, Ind. (WISH) – Amy Beverland Elementary School students returned to class on Monday, nearly one week after the school’s principal, Susan Jordan, was hit and killed by a school bus. The accident happened at the elementary school during its dismissal.

Counselors will be at the school all this week to help the students and staff. Counselors will also be on each school bus. There will also be 15 to 18 therapy dogs at the school on Monday and Tuesday. The school posted an article on its website about dealing with grief.

The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township says it’s changing its procedures during dismissal. Exact details about the procedure change are not known yet, but the school district says additional staff will be on hand during dismissal to help make sure the students are safe.

Connie Thomas has been appointed interim principal of Amy Beverland. Thomas is a retired principal of Indian Creek Elementary School and Sunnyside Elementary School, both in the Lawrence Township school district. Thomas and Jordan were friends.

Book donations are being accepted in Jordan’s memory. You may drop off books at Amy Beverland Elementary School (11650 Fox Road) or take them to the Lawrence Education Community Center (6501 Sunnyside Road).

Monetary donations are also being accepted. To make a donation to the Susan Jordan Memorial Fund, click here.
