Iowa dog meets all top presidential candidates

NORTHWOOD, Iowa (KIMT) – He may not be old enough to vote – unless you count his age in dog years – but an 8-year-old German Sheppard has a very important job when he’s at a campaign event.

“We got a call saying that there are going to be some presidential candidates around the area and they need some assistance with an explosive dog,” says Worth County Sheriff Jay Langenbau.

The reason “Tornado” is travelling across North Iowa is to keep the public safe. Not many have the same talent he does.

“Tornado is actually a duel purpose explosive K-9. He is actually certified on 12 different explosive orders at this time he is certified in handler protection, patrol work, criminal apprehension and tracking,” says Worth County Deputy Chad Wurtzel.

Though much of what Tornado does during these events is not public information, those who partner with the K-9 say he is here to protect the public.

“We get a phone call and if there is any issues with something that maybe suspicious, or just a precautionary thing that might need some help to further safety and security, Tornado gets called out,” says Sheriff Langenbau. “Whether it’s candidates whether it’s schools or the public in general, he is here to help.”
