Scam costs senior citizen $23,000
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A knock on the door caught his attention, and standing on the outside of the door step stood an unknown man. The house belonged to a 94-year-old man.
24-Hour News 8 has decided not to reveal the man’s identity at the request of his family.
According to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department the man on the other side of the door was a con man with a plan to scam the senior citizen.
Once he opened the door the suspect told the senior he could pave his driveway for a good deal and the two agreed.
The stranger told the senior citizen he needed $4,500 to start the job. The 94-year-old wrote one check and then $4,500 turned into another check for $5,000. The victim kept writing the checks until the total reached $23,000.
A bank manager saw the transactions. He then paid a visit to the senior’s house, and that’s when the victim told him about the strange man who demanded cash for a job he never completed.
Police were called to the home, but so far the suspects haven’t been caught.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office these type of crimes happen all to often. Prosecutors believe the targets of these types of scams tend to be senior citizens because they are home during the daytime.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office offers lunch and learn crime prevention presentations to local businesses in Marion County.
The presentations are 30 minutes and they are free. The topics include fraud prevention, burglary prevention and project cybersafe. The prosecutor’s office also offers the program to community neighborhood groups.
