IFD swears in new class of firefighters

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Nearly 40 men and women took a big step toward joining the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The department’s 81st recruiting class took its oath of office Monday.

For the next 20 weeks, the 39 recruits will be tested mentally and physically.

The latest group of recruits is made up of 36 men and three women. Eight of the recruits served in the military and the average age of the class is 29 years old, IFD said.

The group was selected out of more than 1,800 applicants.

The class is expected to graduate July 29.
