‘Beaver Cleaver’ to speak at Indiana Tech commencement

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Jerry Mathers, who garnered fame for his role in the television series “Leave It To Beaver,” will be the featured speaker at Indiana Tech’s commencement in May, school officials announced Tuesday.

“Leave It To Beaver” debuted on CBS in 1957 and reruns of the show can still be seen on TV and online.

Mathers was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the mid-1990s and as a result proceeded to lose 55 pounds, according to information on his official website. He has become a champion of efforts to raise awareness about the disease, its treatment and ways to prevent it.

“Indiana Tech is pleased to have television icon and worldwide champion for those with diabetes, Jerry Mathers, join us as this year’s commencement speaker,” said Indiana Tech President Arthur E. Snyder. “We look forward to having him join us on our university’s biggest day of the year to share his inspirational message with our students.”

Indiana Tech’s commencement is scheduled for May 14 at 10:30 a.m. at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
