Public asked to vote on name for zoo’s newest member

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Zoo needs your help, their newest member of the family needs a name.

The male reticulated giraffe born on Jan. 9 is the zoo’s first birth of 2016, but his birth follows numerous other new members who arrived in 2015. Now, the zoo wants help from the public to name the newest addition.

Fans can vote on Facebook for three names already picked including,Amazu (AH-mah-zoo), meaning “no one knows everything” in Nigerian; Jengo (JANE-goe), a Swahili word meaning “building” or “construction”; Mshangao (ma-SHAN-goe), meaning “amazement” or “surprise” in Swahili, according to a press release.

The poll will open on the Indianapolis Zoo’s Facebook page on Feb. 10 at 6 a.m. and will close on Feb. 23 at 11:59 p.m. Results of the name will be announced on Feb. 24.

Facebook users who like the zoo’s page can vote for their favorite name once a day. The zoo will also give one lucky fan an Indianapolis Zoo pack, which will include a plush giraffe and four zoo tickets.

Visitors to the zoo will be able to seen the new giraffe beginning this spring.
