Ritz gives update on 2016 legislative agenda

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – School Superintendent Glenda Ritz says her agenda is moving forward this legislative session.

In a press conference Tuesday morning, Ritz says she’s happy teachers and schools were not penalized for the low ISTEP scores after transitioning to a more difficult and stricter test.

She says she’ll be working in a new test system that better responds to the needs of students. Ritz is also calling for a pause on the expansion of school vouchers.

“We already have several ways in which to get a school voucher in place in the state of Indiana without a study on how it’s physically impacting our entire education system and meeting the academic needs for our students,” Ritz said.

As to the teacher shortage, Ritz said she’s finding a solution, even after the bill she proposed to recruit new teachers is not moving forward this legislative session.
