INDOT hopes to reduce crashes with new traffic signals

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) – To reduce crashes at signalized intersections, the Indiana Department of Transportation will be changing 364 traffic signals.

According to the release, the changes will occur in mid-May.

The old units will be removed and replaced with new signal heads. They will be installed along U.S. Highway 31 at Greenwood, U.S. 50 at Seymour and State Road 46 at Bloomington, according to INDOT.

The new units will improve visibility and has a special border to alert drivers of its existence in the event of a power outage.

According to a Federal Highway Administration study, after installation of the new signal head, there was a crash reduction of 28.6 percent. There was also a 36.7 percent reduction of personal injury crashes.

The state will pay just under $300,000 and hope to complete the project by July 31.
