IRS claims systems hacked, no information compromised

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The IRS released on Tuesday that thieves were trying to electronically file fraudulent tax returns online.

The IRS said that the thieves were using information that had been stolen outside of the IRS to generate electronic pin numbers for the stolen social security numbers.

An E-file pin can be to electronically file a tax return.

The IRS wanted the public to be aware that they identified 101,000 social security numbers that were used to successfully access an E-file PIN, but that no personal taxpayer data was compromised or disclosed by IRS systems.
