IMPD looking for those responsible in car vandalism string downtown

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police are looking for whoever is responsible for a string of car vandalism near downtown during the overnight hours.

Police say it’s happening to cars parked in metered spots on Market Street near New Jersey Street. There have been several reports of cars having large objects thrown through their windshields during the night and it’s concerning residents who live and work in the area.

“This morning I was walking to my car on my way to work and I saw that three cars had their windshields smashed by a large rock of some kind,” said Joshua Van Arsdall who lives downtown at Market and East streets.

There have been two official police reports filed for these instances in the last three days, but VanArsdall has seen more cars than that hit in just one night.

“There were two that were quite smashed one had just a crater in the windshield,” said VanArsdall,

These public meter spots are often used by visitors to a nearby apartment complex. Weston Tenbarge who usually parks in the area says it’s definitely concerning.

“It’s definitely alarming that things like that do happen around here when you least expect it,” said Tenbarge.

He says these crimes also make him more aware of where he parks his car.

IMPD officers are planning increased patrols in this area overnight. VanArsdall hopes they find those responsible for the thousands of dollars in damage.

“I’m sure they’ll find whoever it is soon especially if they’re going to keep doing it every morning,” said VanArsdall.

IMPD is collecting these reports and investigating any possible links to other crimes and vandalisms in the Downtown District. The apartments nearby are also aware of the issue.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
